Do Roman Catholics worship Mary or just honor and pray to her?
The confusion usually comes from how Catholics define “worship” versus how many Protestants understand it.
1. Do Catholics worship Mary?
In official Roman Catholic Church teaching:
- Worship (adoration)—called latria—is given to God alone (Father, Son, Holy Spirit).
- Mary is given honor—called hyperdulia (a special, high respect).
So, officially, they will say:
- “We do NOT worship Mary as God.”
2. Do Catholics pray to Mary?
Yes—this is where the real issue lies.
Catholics do:
- Pray to Mary
- Ask her to intercede (pray) for them
- Believe she can present their prayers to Jesus
A common example is the “Hail Mary” prayer, where they say:
- “Holy Mary… pray for us sinners…”
So tr correct understanding is: They are not calling her God, but they do use her as a mediator/intercessor.
3. Why do Catholics believe this?
Catholics base this on ideas like:
- The “communion of saints” (believers in heaven are alive and can pray)
Mary’s special role as the mother of Jesus
- Example: Wedding at Cana where Mary speaks to Jesus
They interpret this as: “If Mary could bring a request to Jesus then, she can still intercede now.”
4. What does the Bible say about mediation?
Here is the key verse:
1 Timothy 2:5
- “For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus.”
This is the central concern. Jesus only intercedes not Mary:
- Hebrews 7:25 — Jesus intercedes for us
- John 14:6 — Jesus is the way to the Father
So from a Biblical perspective: Jesus is the only mediator between God and humans
5. Where is the real difference?
The disagreement is not about Mary being God.
It is about this:
| Topic | Catholic View | Biblical/Protestant Concern |
| Worship | Only God is worshipped | Agreed |
| Prayer to Mary | Asking her to intercede | Seen as unnecessary / unscriptural |
| Mediation | Secondary intercessors allowed | Christ alone is mediator |
6. The question is:
- “Roman Catholics don’t worship Mary as God.”
- “But why they should pray to anyone other than Jesus…”
- “Since the Bible says Jesus is the only mediator, wouldn’t going directly to Him be enough?"
7. A balanced conclusion
Catholics do not officially worship Mary as God. But they do pray to Mary and treat her as an intercessor.
The key theological issue is: Is it biblically right to use any mediator besides Jesus?
Think my brothers and sisters. God bless you.
