1 & 2 Corinthians Nutshell
A Church in Crisis – A Gospel That Restores
(Overview of 1 & 2 Corinthians)
Background: The City & The Church
Corinth
- A wealthy port city in Greece
- Commercial center between East and West
- Famous for immorality and idol worship
- The phrase “to live like a Corinthian” meant moral corruption
Paul planted the church during his second missionary journey (Acts 18).
The Author : Paul the Apostle
He wrote:
- 1 Corinthians – to correct problems
- 2 Corinthians – to defend his apostleship and heal relationships
PART 1: 1 CORINTHIANS
“A Correcting Letter to a Divided Church”
1) Problem of DIVISION (Chapters 1–4)
“I follow Paul… I follow Apollos…”
The church was divided by personality loyalty.
Christ is not divided.
Application Today:
- Denomination pride
- Pastor worship
- Ministry competition
Paul says:
The cross, not charisma, is the center.
2) Problem of IMMORALITY (Chapters 5–6)
A shocking case of sexual sin tolerated in the church.
Corinth culture influenced believers more than Christ did.
- Holiness Matters
- Church discipline is biblical
- Grace is not permission for sin
Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit
“You were bought with a price.”
3) Marriage, Singleness & Freedom (Chapter 7)
Paul balances:
- Marriage is honorable
- Singleness is a gift
- Stay faithful in your calling
Serve God where you are.
4) Christian Liberty & Idolatry (Chapters 8–10)
Issue: Can Christians eat food offered to idols?
Paul teaches:
- Knowledge must bow to love
Freedom must not destroy weaker believers
Love is greater than liberty.
5) Worship & Order in Church (Chapters 11–14)
Issues addressed:
- Lord’s Supper abuse
- Spiritual gifts confusion
Disorder in worship
Chapter 13 – The Love Chapter
“If I speak in tongues… but have not love…”
Key Message:
Spiritual gifts without love are noise.
6) Resurrection – The Foundation (Chapter 15)
Some denied resurrection.
Paul declares:
“If Christ has not been raised, your faith is useless.”
The Gospel is Historical & Powerful
- Christ died
- Christ rose
- We will rise
Resurrection is the backbone of Christianity.
PART 2: 2 CORINTHIANS
“A Pastor’s Heart Revealed”
If 1 Corinthians is correction, 2 Corinthians is emotion.
1) Paul’s Suffering & Ministry (Chapters 1–4)
Paul opens his heart.
“We were under great pressure… beyond our ability to endure.”
Strength in Weakness
“We have this treasure in jars of clay.”
Ministry is fragile humans carrying eternal treasure.
2) Forgiveness & Restoration (Chapter 2)
The disciplined sinner repented.
Paul says: Forgive him.
Discipline must end in restoration.
Church discipline is not revenge — it is redemption.
3) The New Covenant Glory (Chapter 3)
Paul contrasts:
- Old covenant (letter)
- New covenant (Spirit)
“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”
4) Ministry of Reconciliation (Chapter 5)
One of the greatest missionary texts.
“We are ambassadors for Christ.”
We represent heaven. God reconciled us.
Now we reconcile others
5) Generosity & Giving (Chapters 8–9)
Paul teaches about offering for Jerusalem church.
Key principles:
- Give willingly
- Give cheerfully
God loves cheerful giver
Grace produces generosity.
6) Paul Defends His Apostleship (Chapters 10–12)
False apostles attacked Paul.
They said:
- He is weak
- He suffers too much
- He is not impressive
Paul responds:
“When I am weak, then I am strong.”
The Thorn in the Flesh
God did not remove Paul’s weakness.
Instead He said:
“My grace is sufficient for you.”

PRACTICAL APPLICATION FOR TODAY’S CHURCH

Return to the cross.
2) Are we tolerating hidden sin?
Return to holiness.
3) Are gifts operating without love?
Return to 1 Corinthians 13.
4) Are leaders discouraged?
Read 2 Corinthians.
5) Are we afraid of weakness?
God’s power shines there.
CLOSING ILLUSTRATION
Corinth was a messy church.
Yet Paul never abandoned them.
That is the Gospel:
God does not give up on imperfect churches.
He corrects. He comforts. He restores.
FINAL DECLARATION
The message of Corinthians is this:
- The Church may be broken
- Leaders may be wounded
- But the Gospel is powerful enough to restore both
