1 Corinthians - Chapter 1: The Cross – The Center of Our Unity

Sermon Title: “The Cross – The Center of Our Unity”

Introduction

The church in Corinth was gifted, growing, and spiritually active — but deeply divided.

It was planted by Paul the Apostle in a wealthy, intellectual Greek city.

Corinth loved:

  • Wisdom
  • Philosophy
  • Public speakers
  • Status and pride

Sadly, those same values entered the church.

So in Chapter 1, Paul addresses one core issue:

When Christ is not the center, division begins.

I. Our Call in Christ (1:1–9)

Paul begins not with rebuke — but with reminder.

He reminds them:

  • You are called to be saints
  • You are sanctified in Christ Jesus
  • You are enriched in every way

God is faithful

Key Truth: Our identity is not in leaders, gifts, or status — Our identity is in Christ.

Application: Before correcting behavior, remember your calling.

II. Our Problem – Division and Human Pride (1:10–17)

Paul appeals for unity.

People were saying:

  • “I follow Paul”
  • “I follow Apollos”
  • “I follow Cephas”
  • “I follow Christ”

Paul asks:

  • “Is Christ divided?”

The issue was not theology — The issue was pride.

They were turning spiritual leaders into brands.

Key Truth: Whenever personalities become central, Christ becomes secondary.

Application for today:

  • Church divisions
  • Denominational pride
  • Celebrity Christianity
  • “My preacher” mentality

The church was never meant to be personality-centered — It is Christ-centered.

III. Our Solution – The Message of the Cross (1:18–25)

Now Paul moves to the heart of the chapter.

“The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”

  • To the Greeks — it sounded foolish.
  • To the Jews — it was offensive.

But God chose the cross.

Why?

Because the cross destroys human pride.

The cross says:

  • You cannot save yourself.
  • Your wisdom cannot redeem you.
  • Your status cannot justify you.

Key Truth: The cross humbles the proud and saves the humble.

IV. God’s Way – Choosing the Weak (1:26–29)

Paul reminds them:

  • Not many were wise.
  • Not many were powerful.
  • Not many were noble.

Yet God chose them.

Why?

“So that no one may boast before Him.”

God delights in using the weak.

Because when the weak are used, God gets the glory.

Application: If you feel insignificant — you are qualified. If you feel weak — you are usable.

V. Our Glory – In Christ Alone (1:30–31)

Paul concludes powerfully:

Christ became for us:

  • Wisdom
  • Righteousness
  • Sanctification
  • Redemption

Therefore:

“Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”

  • Not in education.
  • Not in ministry success.
  • Not in church size.
  • Not in spiritual gifts.

But in Christ alone.

Conclusion (Call to Reflection)

Ask yourself:

  • Who is at the center of our church?
  • Who is at the center of my life?
  • What do I glory in?
  • Are we divided by pride?
When the cross is central:

  • Pride dies
  • Unity grows
  • Grace flows
  • God is glorified

If we make the cross our center,

the church will not break — it will grow.
