Ephesians 2: He made us alive with Christ
Ephesians 2 is a powerful contrast between what we were and what God has made us.
Paul begins with a hard truth:
- We were dead in sin, walking according to the world, enslaved by desires, and under judgment. This is not weakness—it is spiritual death.
But then comes one of the most hope-filled turns in Scripture:
- “But God…”
Because of His great love and mercy:
- He made us alive with Christ
- He raised us up
- He seated us in heavenly places
And Paul makes it clear:
- This salvation is not earned—it is a gift of grace through faith, so no one can boast.
Then he moves from personal salvation to corporate unity:
- Jews and Gentiles, once divided, are now one in Christ
- Christ has broken the wall of hostility
- He has made one new humanity
- We are now citizens of God’s Kingdom, members of His household
Finally, Paul gives a beautiful picture: The Church is being built together as a holy temple, where God dwells by His Spirit.
Key Theological Points
1. Total Depravity (Spiritual Death)
Humanity is not just flawed—we are spiritually dead apart from Christ.
Salvation is not self-improvement; it is resurrection.
2. Grace-Centered Salvation
“By grace you have been saved through faith”
- Not by works
- Not by effort
- Entirely God’s initiative
This destroys pride and establishes humility.
3. Union with Christ
Believers are:
- Alive with Christ
- Raised with Christ
- Seated with Christ
This speaks of identity, authority, and spiritual position.
4. Purpose of Salvation
- “We are His workmanship… created for good works”
Good works are not the cause of salvation, but the evidence and result of it.
5. Reconciliation and Unity
Christ:
- Broke the dividing wall
- Abolished hostility
- Created one new humanity
The Gospel is not only vertical (God and man) but also horizontal (man and man).
6. The Church as God’s Dwelling
The Church is:
- Built on apostles and prophets
- Christ is the cornerstone
- A living temple where God dwells
The Church is not just a gathering—it is God’s habitation.
Guidance to the Church Today
1. Never Forget Your Past Condition
Remember: you were once dead.
This produces:
- Humility
- Gratitude
- Compassion for the lost
A church that forgets this becomes proud and judgmental.
2. Stay Rooted in Grace, Not Performance
Do not drift into:
- Legalism (“I must earn God’s favor”)
- Pride (“I am better than others”)
The Church must preach grace boldly and live it consistently.
3. Guard Unity Fiercely
Christ died to break divisions—don’t rebuild them:
- Caste
- Language
- Culture
- Status
If Christ made us one, division is not just a social issue—it is a spiritual contradiction.
4. Live as God’s Temple
The Church is where God dwells:
- Holiness is not optional
- Compromise is dangerous
Ask:
- Does my life reflect that God lives here?
5. Walk in Prepared Good Works
You were saved for a purpose:
- Serve
- Build others
- Be a witness
A saved but inactive believer contradicts Ephesians 2.
Closing Exhortation
- You were dead, but now you are alive.
- You were far, but now you are brought near.
- You were strangers, but now you are family.
So Church—
- Live like the resurrected
- Walk in grace
- Protect unity
- Build the house of God
Because you are not just saved…
You are being built into something eternal.
