Question: hurting ourselves please God? What Bible says?

The Bible speaks very clearly against the idea that hurting or damaging your body can please God. In fact, it consistently teaches the opposite: God desires obedience, holiness, and a transformed heart—not self-inflicted suffering or ritual harm.

Let’s break this down in a strong, biblical way.

🔥 1. Your body is not to be harmed — it belongs to God

The apostle Paul the Apostle writes:

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit…?” (1 Corinthians 6:19–20)

👉 This means:

Your body is God’s dwelling place

Damaging it intentionally is dishonoring God

You are called to care for your body, not destroy it

⚔️ 2. God rejects pagan practices of self-harm

In the Old Testament, God strictly forbade practices that involved cutting or harming the body as a form of worship:

“Do not cut your bodies for the dead…” (Leviticus 19:28)

A powerful example is in the story of First Book of Kings (1 Kings 18):

The prophets of Baal cut themselves with knives to get their god’s attention

They cried out, bled, and suffered

But what happened?

👉 Nothing. Silence. No answer.

In contrast, the prophet Elijah simply prayed—and the true God answered with fire.

🔥 Message:

Self-harm is not faith—it is deception rooted in false worship.

🛑 3. Extreme bodily punishment is called “false humility”

Again, Paul the Apostle warns in Colossians 2:23:

“Such practices indeed have an appearance of wisdom… with their self-imposed worship, false humility, and harsh treatment of the body—but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.”

👉 Key truth:

Beating the body ≠ defeating sin

External suffering ≠ internal transformation

It looks spiritual, but it is powerless

✝️ 4. True sacrifice is not physical harm—but surrender

The Bible redefines “sacrifice” completely:

“Offer your bodies as a living sacrifice…” (Romans 12:1)

This does NOT mean hurting yourself.

It means:

Living in holiness

Obeying God daily

Surrendering your will—not cutting your flesh

❤️ 5. God desires mercy, not suffering rituals

Throughout Scripture, God rejects empty, painful rituals:

“I desire mercy, not sacrifice…” (Hosea 6:6)

Even Jesus Christ emphasized this truth.

👉 God is not pleased when people:

Harm themselves

Perform rituals to “earn” His love

Try to manipulate Him through pain

⚠️ 6. Why these practices are dangerous (biblically)

The Bible shows these practices are:

Rooted in idolatry

Driven by fear and deception

Connected to false gods or demonic influence

They teach a lie: 👉 “If I suffer enough, God will accept me.”

But the Gospel says: 👉 “Christ already suffered for you.”

✝️ FINAL TRUTH (POWERFUL)

You don’t need to bleed to reach God.

Jesus Christ already bled for you.

He took the suffering

He paid the price

He opened the way

👉 Your response is not self-harm

👉 Your response is faith, repentance, and a transformed life

🔥 STRONG WARNING TO THE CHURCH

Any teaching that promotes:

Hurting the body to please God

Extreme fasting to the point of damage

Physical punishment as “spiritual discipline”

❌ is not from God

❌ is a distortion of true worship

🙏 TRUE WORSHIP LOOKS LIKE:

A pure heart

A surrendered life

Love for God and people

Obedience to His Word.
