Galatians 2: NO COMPROMISE: JUSTIFIED BY FAITH, NOT BY LAW!

Galatians Chapter 2—this chapter is not gentle; it is a battlefield of truth vs compromise.

“NO COMPROMISE: JUSTIFIED BY FAITH, NOT BY LAW!”

CONTEXT OF GALATIANS 2

The Apostle Paul the Apostle is defending the true Gospel against false teachers who were adding Jewish law (circumcision) to salvation.

The issue:

  • Is Jesus enough? Or do we need Jesus + Law?

1. THE GOSPEL IS NOT NEGOTIABLE (Gal 2:1–10)

Paul goes to Jerusalem and meets the leaders, including Peter the Apostle.

Even though pressure was there, Paul declares:

  • “We did NOT give in… so that the truth of the gospel might remain!”

Revelation:

  • Gospel is not culture-based
  • Gospel is not tradition-based
  • Gospel is Christ-centered ONLY

Titus (a Gentile) was NOT forced to be circumcised

Salvation is not by religious rituals

2. WHY PAUL REBUKED PETER (Gal 2:11–14)

This is shocking.

Paul publicly rebukes Peter.

What happened?

  • Peter used to eat with Gentiles freely
  • But when Jewish leaders came…

He withdrew out of fear

Even Barnabas got influenced!

THE PROBLEM:

  • Peter was not preaching wrong…
  • He was living wrong

Paul’s Bold Action:

  • “I opposed him to his face!”

WHY DID PAUL REBUKE HIM?

1. Hypocrisy

Peter acted like:

“Gentiles are accepted”… but then avoided them

2. Fear of Man

He feared people more than God

3. Gospel Distortion

His behavior sent a message: “Jesus is not enough… you must follow Jewish law”

Wrong behavior can corrupt right doctrine

A silent compromise is still a loud message!

3. THE CORE THEOLOGY: JUSTIFICATION BY FAITH (Gal 2:15–21)

This is the heart of the chapter.

KEY VERSE:

  • “A man is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ.”

WHAT IS “JUSTIFICATION”?

  • Declared righteous before God
  • Not by works… but by faith

WHAT LAW CANNOT DO:

  • Cannot save
  • Cannot justify
  • Cannot make you righteous

Law reveals sin, but cannot remove sin

WHAT CHRIST DID:

  • Took your sin
  • Gave His righteousness
  • Finished the work on the cross

Law says: DO

Grace says: DONE

4. DYING TO LAW, LIVING IN CHRIST (Gal 2:19–20)

THE MOST POWERFUL VERSE:

  • “I have been crucified with Christ…”

DEEP TRUTH:

  • Your old identity is dead
  • Your self-righteousness is dead
  • Your legalism is dead

NEW LIFE:

“Christ lives in me!”

  • Christianity is not behavior modification
  • It is divine transformation
  • You are not trying to live for Christ
  • Christ is living through you!

5. WARNING: DON’T REBUILD WHAT CHRIST DESTROYED (v18)

  • Paul says: If you go back to Law… you make yourself a sinner again

MODERN APPLICATION:

Today’s church danger:

  • Jesus + tradition
  • Jesus + rituals
  • Jesus + works

That is another gospel

6. FINAL WARNING (v21)

  • “If righteousness comes by law, Christ died for nothing!”

STRONG WORD:

Adding Law to salvation = Insulting the Cross

FINAL CLIMAX:

Listen carefully:

  • If Law could save you…
  • Jesus didn’t need to die
  • If your works could justify you…
  • The cross is meaningless

ALTAR CALL

Are you:

  • Living to impress people like Peter?
  • Trusting your works more than Christ?
  • Mixing grace with law?

CALL:

  • Come back to the TRUE GOSPEL
  • Lay down your self-righteousness
  • Stop striving… start trusting

DECLARATION:

  • “I am not justified by law…
  • I am justified by faith in Jesus Christ!”

ONE-LINE TAKEAWAY:

  • “Jesus + Nothing = Everything.”
