Question: Is This Love… or Is This God’s Will?” marriage with a non-believer
This is a very real and important question—especially among church youth. We are not just answering a romantic question, but guiding a life decision that affects destiny, faith, and calling.
1. FIRST TRUTH: LOVE ALONE IS NOT ENOUGH
Many young people think:
- “I feel love → so it must be God’s will.”
But the Bible never teaches that feelings = God’s will.
Proverbs 3:5–6
“Trust in the Lord… lean not on your own understanding…”
- Feelings can mislead
- Emotions can be temporary
- God’s will is discerned, not just felt
2. GOD’S WILL IS ALWAYS ALIGNED WITH GOD’S WORD
You don’t need confusion where Scripture is already clear.
2 Corinthians 6:14
- “Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers...”
Amos 3:3
- “Can two walk together unless they are agreed?”
Marriage is not just romance—it is spiritual partnership
CLEAR BIBLICAL ANSWER:
SHOULD A BELIEVER MARRY A NON-BELIEVER?
Biblically: NO
Not because God is restrictive…
But because God is protective.
WHY GOD WARNS AGAINST IT: let's check the reasons.
1. DIFFERENT SPIRITUAL DIRECTIONS
One spouse follows Christ
Another does not follows Christ
Eventually, below consequences may occur:
- Prayer life suffers
- Church commitment weakens
- Children get confused spiritually
2. IT PULLS THE BELIEVER AWAY FROM GOD
1 Kings 11:4 (Solomon)
- “His wives turned his heart after other gods…”
Even the wisest man fell because of wrong relationships.
3. PURPOSE GETS DISTORTED
Marriage is meant to:
- Build God’s kingdom
- Support calling
- Strengthen faith
Unequal yoke = constant inner conflict
3. THEN HOW TO KNOW GOD’S WILL IN LOVE?
Let youth follow this 4-step discernment test:
1. THE WORD TEST
Does this relationship obey Scripture?
If it violates God’s Word → it is NOT God’s will.
2. THE PEACE TEST
Colossians 3:15
“Let the peace of God rule in your hearts…”
- Not excitement…
- Not butterflies…
- But deep spiritual peace
3. THE PURPOSE TEST
Ask:
Will this person help me grow in Christ?
Or pull me away slowly?
God’s will always pushes you closer to Him
4. THE COUNSEL TEST
Proverbs 11:14
“In the multitude of counselors there is safety.”
God speaks through these people:
- Pastors
- Mature believers
- Godly parents
WHAT IF THE PERSON IS A “GOOD” NON-BELIEVER?
This is where many youth get confused.
They say:
“But he is kind… respectful… moral…”
But salvation is not about being “good”
2 Corinthians 5:17
- “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation…”
Marriage is not based on:
- Character alone
- But spiritual identity
IMPORTANT CLARIFICATION
1 Corinthians 7:12–14
- This passage talks about: If someone is already married to an unbeliever
- It does NOT encourage believers to choose unbelievers.
HARD TRUTH FOR YOUTH
Sometimes they ask:
“What if I already love them?”
Tell them honestly:
- Love is not always from God
- Attachment is not confirmation
- Sacrifice is part of obedience
Luke 9:23
“Deny yourself… take up your cross…”
“If they are not aligned with your God, they cannot walk with your destiny.”
“Don’t choose someone you have to compromise Christ for.”
“Don’t fall in love and then ask God to approve it…
Ask God first, and then fall in love.”
INDIAN CHURCH CONTEXT (VERY PRACTICAL)
In India:
- Family pressure
- Emotional attachment
- Secret relationships
Many youth hide relationships because they KNOW it’s not right.
Encourage:
- Openness
- Accountability
- Spiritual maturity
FINAL SUMMARY (FOR YOUTH)
- God’s will never contradicts God’s Word
- Marriage is spiritual, not just emotional
- Believer + unbeliever = unequal yoke
- Wait for God’s confirmation, not just feelings
