Question and Sermon : How to understand this: Jesus gave Keys to st. Peter and Pen to st. Paul?
This is a powerful and often misunderstood topic—and let’s be clear from the beginning:
The Bible explicitly mentions the “keys” given to Peter, but it never literally says Paul was given a “pen.”
That idea comes from how God used Paul, not from a direct symbolic act like Peter’s keys.
THE KEYS GIVEN TO PETER
In Matthew 16:18–19, Jesus speaks directly to Peter:
- “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven…” This is spoken to Simon Peter
What do the “keys” mean?
Keys represent authority to open and close.
- Not ownership—but stewardship
- Not supremacy—but responsibility
Fulfillment in Acts
Watch how Peter uses these “keys”:
- Acts 2 (Jews) – Peter opens the door of salvation at Pentecost
- Acts 8 (Samaritans) – inclusion of mixed race believers
- Acts 10 (Gentiles) – Cornelius’ house receives the Gospel
Peter didn’t build the Church—he opened the doors.
WAS PAUL GIVEN A “PEN”?
Reality from Scripture
There is no verse where Jesus says:
- “Paul, I give you a pen.”
But what do we see?
Paul the Apostle wrote:
- Romans
- Corinthians
- Galatians
- Ephesians
- Philippians
- Colossians
- Thessalonians
- Timothy
- Titus
- Philemon
That’s 13 epistles shaping Christian theology.
What does the Bible say about his role?
Galatians 1:11–12
- “The gospel I preached is not of human origin… I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ.”
Paul wasn’t given a pen—
- He was given revelation, and the pen followed.
KEYS vs PEN (SPIRITUAL UNDERSTANDING)
Peter ->. Paul
Given keys -> Given revelation
Opened doors -> Built doctrine
Action (Acts) -> Explanation (Epistles)
Initiated access -> Established understanding
Together, they form:
Entrance -> Foundation
Sermon Title: “Keys Without Revelation… Pens Without Power”
Introduction
The Church today is full of:
- People who want authority (keys)
- But avoid responsibility (truth)
And others:
- Full of knowledge (pen)
- But no spiritual authority
1. PETER: THE MAN WITH KEYS BUT BROKENNESS
Jesus gave keys to Peter—not because he was perfect…
But because he was revealable (Matthew 16:17)
Yet the same Peter:
- Rebuked Jesus
- Denied Jesus
Lesson: God gives keys not to the strongest—but to the surrendered
2. PAUL: THE MAN WITH FIRE IN HIS PEN
Paul had:
- No position among the 12
- No early reputation
But he had:
- Encounters
- Revelation
- Suffering
His letters came from:
- Prison
- Pain
- Persecution
Lesson: Your greatest ministry may come from your deepest wounds
3. TODAY’S DANGER
Keys without truth:
- Authority without holiness
- Titles without transformation
Pen without power:
- Sermons without Spirit
- Theology without fire
The Church must reject both extremes
4. GOD’S DESIGN
Jesus never intended:
- Only Peter ministry
- Only Paul ministry
He wants both:
- Authority to open heaven
- Revelation to sustain the Church
ALTAR CALL
Today ask yourself:
- Do I want position like Peter?
- Or revelation like Paul?
- Or are you willing to carry BOTH?
Cry out:
- “Lord, don’t just give me keys—give me character.
- Don’t just give me a pen—give me fire.”
FINAL DECLARATION
The next generation Church must rise with:
- Peter’s boldness
- Paul’s depth
- Christ’s nature.
