Galatians 5 – Why Paul speaks strongly about the Law

The church in Galatia was being influenced by false teachers (Judaizers) who were saying:

  • “Faith in Christ is not enough. You must also follow the Law of Moses (like circumcision) to be saved.”

This was a serious distortion of the Gospel.

So Paul writes Galatians with strong emotion because:

  • The core message of salvation by grace through faith was under attack
  • Believers were slipping back into legalism (trying to earn righteousness)
  • They were mixing grace + law, which Paul says destroys true freedom

That’s why in Chapter 5, Paul draws a clear line: LAW vs GRACE, FLESH vs SPIRIT, SLAVERY vs FREEDOM

1) Stand Firm in Freedom (v1–6)

Paul begins with a bold declaration:

  • “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free!”

Don’t go back to slavery under the Law

If you depend on circumcision (law-keeping) → you are obligated to keep the entire law

Trying to be justified by law = falling away from grace

True Christianity is:

  • Not external rituals
  • But faith working through love

2) Warning Against False Teaching (v7–12)

Paul uses strong language here:

  • “You were running well—who hindered you?”

False teaching spreads like leaven (yeast)—it corrupts everything

These teachers were confusing and misleading the church

Paul is protective because: A small doctrinal error can destroy the whole Gospel

3) Freedom is Not License to Sin (v13–15)

Paul balances his teaching:

  • Freedom in Christ ≠ doing whatever you want
  • Instead → serve one another in love

  • He summarizes the law in one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself”

Warning:

If you live in bitterness, division, and conflict, you will destroy each other

4) Walk by the Spirit vs Flesh (v16–26)

This is the heart of the chapter.

Works of the Flesh:

  • Sexual immorality
  • Idolatry
  • Hatred, jealousy, anger
  • Drunkenness, selfish ambition

Those who live like this will not inherit the Kingdom of God

Fruit of the Spirit:

  • Love
  • Joy
  • Peace
  • Patience
  • Kindness
  • Goodness
  • Faithfulness
  • Gentleness
  • Self-control

These are not produced by the Law

They come by walking in the Spirit

Why Paul strongly rejects the Law here

Paul is not saying the Law is evil. Instead:

  • The Law reveals sin, but cannot save
  • The Law demands perfection, but we are weak
  • Christ fulfilled the Law, so we don’t need to earn righteousness

If you go back to the Law for justification:

You reject Christ’s finished work

You return to slavery

You lose the power of the Spirit

Core Message of Galatians 5

  • Don’t mix Law + Grace
  • Don’t trade Freedom for Religion
  • Don’t live by Flesh—live by Spirit

Simple One-Line Summary

“Christ set you free—don’t go back to religious bondage; walk in the Spirit and produce real fruit.”
