1 Corinthians 14: God is not impressed by noise — He is pleased with edification

In 1 Corinthians 14, First Epistle to the Corinthians, Paul the Apostle addresses the use of spiritual gifts in the church, especially tongues and prophecy.

Main Points:

  • Pursue love first (v.1)
  • Spiritual gifts must flow from love—not pride or showmanship.
  • Prophecy > Tongues (in public worship)
  • Tongues = speaks to God (personal edification)
  • Prophecy = speaks to people (edifies the church)

Edification is the goal

Everything in church must build others up, not confuse them.

Clarity matters

If tongues are used, there must be interpretation. Otherwise, it’s meaningless to others.

Order in worship

God is not a God of confusion, but of peace (v.33)

Self-control in gifts

Spiritual gifts are not uncontrollable; believers can use them wisely and orderly.

 “Build the Church, Not Yourself

Church, listen carefully.

Today many are excited about gifts… but God is more concerned about growth.

Paul the Apostle is not against tongues—but he asks a deeper question:

“Is the church being built?”

You may speak in the tongues of angels…

But if no one understands…

  1. The new believer is confused
  2. The unbeliever thinks you are mad
  3. The church is not strengthened

But when you speak a word that encourages, corrects, and comforts,

  • the whole church rises in faith.

God is not impressed by noise — He is pleased with edification.

So ask yourself:

  • Am I trying to impress people?
  • Or am I trying to build people?

Because true spirituality is not seen in how loud you speak, but in how much others grow because of you.

Gentle Warning to Pastors & Leaders (About Tongues Misuse)

This is not condemnation—but loving correction.

Today, in some churches, the gift of tongues is:

Common Misuses:

Used publicly without interpretation

– Directly against Paul’s instruction.

Forced or emotionally manipulated

– People are pressured to “speak something” to prove spirituality.

Treated as a status symbol

– “If you don’t speak in tongues, you are not spiritual.”

Creates confusion for visitors

– Especially unbelievers or new believers.

Disorderly services

– Everyone speaking at once, no structure.

Biblical Correction

Paul the Apostle gives very clear guidance:

  • If no interpreter → keep silent in church
  • Speak one by one, not all at once
  • Focus on edifying others, not yourself
  • Maintain order and peace

A Gentle Pastoral Appeal

Dear Pastors and Leaders,

The Holy Spirit is not honored by confusion,

He is honored by clarity, order, and truth.

Let us not:

  • Turn a gift into a performance
  • Turn a spiritual experience into pressure
  • Turn worship into chaos

Instead, let us shepherd people with wisdom.

Use the gift…

But use it biblically, humbly, and lovingly.

Closing Line

“The true sign of the Spirit is not how high you speak in tongues… but how deeply the church is built.”
