1 Corinthians 3: God’s Building, God’s Temple
Sermon Title: “God’s Building, God’s Temple”
Text: 1 Corinthians 3
Introduction
The church at Corinth was gifted, passionate, and spiritually active. But they had a serious problem — division and spiritual immaturity. In 1 Corinthians 3, Paul addresses three key issues:
- Spiritual immaturity
- Wrong view of leaders
- Careless building on Christ
This chapter teaches us what a mature church looks like.
1) Spiritual Immaturity – “Milk, Not Solid Food” (vv.1–4)
Paul says:
“I could not speak to you as spiritual people, but as worldly… I fed you with milk, not solid food.”
Though they were believers, they were still acting like babies in Christ.
Signs of Spiritual Immaturity:
- Jealousy
- Strife
- Divisions
Personality-based loyalty (“I follow Paul,” “I follow Apollos”)
Immaturity is not about how long you've been in church.
It’s about how much Christ has changed your character.
- Are we easily offended?
- Do we compare ministries?
- Do we compete instead of cooperate?
Spiritual growth is measured by humility and unity.
2) The Right View of Christian Leaders (vv.5–9)
Paul corrects their misunderstanding:
“What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants…”
He gives a powerful illustration:
- Paul planted
- Apollos watered
- But God gave the growth
Key Truth:
- Leaders are servants.
- God alone gives increase.
We must never idolize preachers, pastors, or teachers.
Whether it is:
- Paul
- Apollos
- Or any modern preacher
They are instruments — God is the source.
Don’t build your faith around personalities.
Build it on Christ.
3) The Foundation Is Christ (vv.10–11)
Paul now shifts to a construction metaphor.
“No one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”
The foundation is not:
- A denomination
- A gifted preacher
- A tradition
The foundation is Jesus Christ alone.
If Christ is not the center, the building will collapse.
4) How Are You Building? (vv.12–15)
Paul says we build on the foundation using different materials:
- Gold
- Silver
- Precious stones
- Wood
- Hay
- Straw
One day, fire will test each person’s work.
Not the foundation — but the quality of the building.
What survives the fire?
Motives done for God’s glory
- Faithfulness
- Obedience
- Love
- What burns?
- Pride
- Showmanship
- Self-promotion
- Ministry done for fame
Even believers may be saved, but their works may burn.
Why are we serving?
For applause — or for eternity?
5) You Are God’s Temple (vv.16–17)
Paul makes a powerful statement:
“Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?”
This is not just individual — it is corporate.
The church together is God’s temple.
Division destroys the temple.
And Paul warns — God takes this seriously.
When we divide the church:
- Through gossip
- Through pride
- Through factions
We damage God’s dwelling place.
6) True Wisdom vs Worldly Wisdom (vv.18–23)
The Corinthians valued human wisdom and eloquence.
Paul says:
“The wisdom of this world is foolishness with God.”
True wisdom is humility before God.
And he concludes beautifully:
- “All things are yours… and you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.”
- Stop competing.
- Stop dividing.
Everything already belongs to you in Christ.
3 Main Takeaways
1. Grow Up Spiritually
- Leave jealousy and comparison behind.
2. Keep Christ as the Only Foundation
- Not personalities. Not preferences.
3. Build for Eternity
- Your service will be tested by fire.
Imagine building a house:
- One builder uses marble and steel.
- Another uses dry grass and cardboard.
- Both look good initially.
- But when fire comes — only one stands.
One day, our work will face eternal testing.
Let us build with:
- Faithfulness
- Purity
- Love
- Christ-centered motives
Final Challenge
Church, remember:
- You are not a club.
- You are not a social group.
- You are God’s temple.
Build wisely.
Live united.
Stand on Christ.
Amen. 🙏
