Proverbs 31 – The Virtuous Woman
A Women’s Day Sermon
On Women’s Day, the Bible gives us a powerful picture of womanhood in Book of Proverbs chapter 31. This chapter is not merely praising a “perfect woman,” but revealing God’s design and dignity for women.
Interestingly, the words come from King Lemuel, who records the wisdom taught by his mother (Prov. 31:1). This shows that godly mothers shape leaders and nations.
1. A Woman of Noble Character
Proverbs 31:10 — “A virtuous woman, who can find? For her price is far above rubies.”
The Bible begins by highlighting character, not beauty or status.
- God values character over appearance
- A woman’s worth is not defined by society but by God
- Godly character is rare and precious
In a world that measures women by fashion, fame, or followers, God measures by faithfulness and virtue.
2. A Woman Who Builds Her Family
Proverbs 31:11–12
“The heart of her husband safely trusts in her.”
A Proverbs 31 woman creates stability and peace in the home.
- She is trustworthy
- She seeks the good of her family
- She brings honor to her marriage
A godly woman is not weak; she is a pillar that holds the house together.
3. A Hardworking and Responsible Woman
Proverbs 31:13–19
This woman is:
- Working with her hands
- Managing the household
- Providing for the family
- Being productive
This shows that diligence is part of godliness.
The Bible celebrates women who are wise, industrious, and responsible.
4. A Compassionate Woman
Proverbs 31:20
“She opens her hand to the poor.”
A godly woman is not only concerned about her home, but also about the needy.
Her life shows:
- Kindness
- Generosity
- Mercy
True spirituality always produces compassion for others.
5. A Wise Woman
Proverbs 31:26
“She opens her mouth with wisdom.”
Her speech reflects:
- wisdom
- grace
- encouragement
The words of a godly woman build people, not destroy them.
6. Her True Beauty: Fear of the Lord
Proverbs 31:30
“Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”
This is the central message of the chapter.
External beauty fades, but reverence for God lasts forever.
A woman who fears God:
- lives with integrity
- honors God in her choices
- influences generations
7. Her Legacy and Honor
Proverbs 31:28
“Her children arise and call her blessed.”
A godly woman’s greatest reward is her legacy.
Her influence shapes:
- families
- churches
- nations
Behind many great leaders are praying mothers and faithful women.
Conclusion
The Proverbs 31 woman is not a superhuman ideal, but a model of godly womanhood.
She is:
- Faithful to God
- Strong in character
- Wise in speech
- Diligent in work
- Compassionate to others
A blessing to her family
On this Women’s Day, we celebrate women who fear the Lord and walk in His wisdom.
Final Challenge
To every woman:
Your beauty is not your greatest treasure
Your success is not your greatest legacy
Your greatest glory is a life that fears and honors God.
“A woman who fears the Lord shall be praised.”
