Sermon: “Poverty Is Not a Curse - but GOD is your Portion”
1. Introduction
Heaven does not measure you by your bank account
Church, hear this clearly:
Some people have preached a gospel that says,
“If you are poor, you are cursed.”
- “If you don’t have money, you don’t have faith.”
- But today, we are going to break that lie with the Word of God!
Because the Bible does not say:
- “Blessed are the rich…”
It says:
- “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God” — Luke 6:20
That means: Heaven does not measure you by your bank account.
Heaven measures you by your heart.
2. POVERTY IS NOT A SIGN OF GOD’S REJECTION
Look at Job:
- A righteous man
- A God-fearing man
- Yet he lost everything
Did God curse him?
NO!
- God trusted him!
Your condition is not always your condemnation.
Sometimes your situation is a stage for God’s glory!
3. POVERTY OFTEN COMES FROM A BROKEN WORLD
The Bible shows:
- The poor are oppressed
- The needy are exploited
- The weak are ignored
Poverty is often the result of:
- injustice
- corruption
- human sin
- Not God’s punishment!
Isaiah says: unjust laws rob the poor.
So stop blaming people for what society has broken!
4. JESUS DID NOT REJECT THE POOR — HE IDENTIFIED WITH THEM
Look at Jesus Christ:
- Born in a manger
- Raised in a simple home
- Had no place to lay His head
2 Corinthians 8:9 says:
- “He became poor so that you might become rich”
If poverty was a curse…
- Why would Jesus step into it?
Because He came to prove: Your worth is not in wealth — it is in God!
5. THE REAL DANGER IS NOT POVERTY — IT IS PRIDE
The Bible never says:
- “Money is evil”
It says:
- “The LOVE of money is the root of all evil” — 1 Timothy 6:10
You can be:
- Rich and lost
- Poor and righteous
- Poor and close to God
- Rich and far from God
The real question is NOT: “How much do you have?”
It is: “Who do you have?”
6. GOD HONORS THE HEART OF THE POOR
Remember the widow:
- She gave two small coins
- But Jesus said she gave more than all
Heaven measures:
- Sacrifice
- Faith
- Dependence
Not numbers!
“God has chosen the poor to be rich in faith” — James 2:5
7. DECLARATION MOMENT
Say this in your spirit:
- “My poverty is not my curse!”
- “My situation is not my identity!”
- “God is my portion!”
BALANCE (TRUTH WITH WISDOM)
Yes, the Bible also says:
- Laziness can lead to poverty
- Lack of discipline can bring lack
But hear this carefully:
- Not all poverty is sin
- Not all wealth is blessing
ALTAR CALL
Now Church… this is the moment.
Some of you are sitting here with:
- Financial struggles
- Shame
- Comparison
- Feeling rejected
You think: “God has forgotten me…”
But today God is saying:
- “I SEE YOU”
- “I KNOW YOU”
- “YOU ARE NOT CURSED”
CALL TO RESPONSE
If you are here and:
- You feel broken because of lack
- You feel less because of your situation
- You feel like others are ahead of you
I want you to lift your hands right now.
I declare over your life:
- Shame is broken
- Lies are destroyed
- Identity is restored
You are not cursed — you are called
You are not rejected — you are chosen
You are not empty — God is your portion
ALTAR PRAYER
“Lord Jesus,
I reject every lie that says I am cursed.
I receive Your truth today.
You are my provider.
You are my identity.
You are my portion.
Even in lack, I will trust You.
Even in struggle, I will follow You.
Make me rich in faith,
Strong in spirit,
And faithful in every season.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
You may not have everything in your hand…
But if you have God in your heart—
You have everything that matters
